Small business leaders yesterday expressed their relief that the blockades at major oil refineries were failing to impact on stations and motorists.
The Forum of Private Business (FPB) feared demonstrations by the Fuel Lobby could slow the wheels of commerce and cost businesses throughout the United Kingdom £1bn.
The dismal attempts of Andrew Spence and other campaigners to prevent petrol being distributed was greeted warmly by the group, who prefer to lobby Gordon Brown rather than businesses.
Ben Pinnington, spokesman for the FPB said: "Although we do not agree with the sort of direct action the Fuel Lobby is taking, it has arrested the attention of the nation.
"We are calling for backing for our own campaign to persuade Gordon Brown to bring down his exorbitant tax."
