North meets South for maritime festival

A maritme festival featuring an international cast of performers ended with a spectacular fireworks show last night.

The Mouth of the Tyne Festival took place in Tynemouth, North Tyneside, and South Shields, South Tyneside, on Saturday and Sunday.

Bands from Australia and Holland, dancers from Spain and British puppeteers all performed at the festival, a celebration of maritime heritage and culture.

On Saturday afternoon, Tynemouth's Fish Quay was the venue for one of the festival's highlights "In the Dhol drums", which featured a giant mobile dhol drum from North India flanked by drummers.

A fireworks and laser spectacular called Malabar  lit up the South Shields sky from Gypsies Green to Harbour Drive on Saturday night.

And the same show entertained crowds in North Shields Fish Quay yesterday evening.

North Tyneside mayor John Harrison said: "It's great to see the North-East coming together to stage world-class events and with the Tall Ships' Races later in July, I'm sure this is going to be a month to remember."
