Helping put Stockton on the map

Feb 22 2006

Darren Thwaites, Editor, Evening Gazette, Evening Gazette

The spectrum of stories in today's Tees Pride supplement shows quite clearly how Stockton is pushing ahead on many fronts.

From regeneration and education to tasty Teesside-grown tomatoes - it's a borough that's embracing change in every direction.

Today we celebrate some of the projects that are helping the borough move ahead.

This is set to be a busy year for Stockton on the regeneration front.

Multi-million pound schemes have been launched across the area.

These range from residential schemes building better futures for local residents to major redevelopment projects which will bring new life to town centres.

On top of this Stockton's huge North Shore project is pushing ahead.

The ambitious £300m, 12-year plan includes building offices, bars, cafes, a hotel and luxury waterfront apartments, and a spectacular new bridge which will span the River Tees to link the site with Thornaby's Teesdale development.

And when it comes to business, this isn't an area that's afraid to do something different.

Teesside tomatoes are now being served up in homes across the country thanks to a pioneering project.

Gigantic glasshouses are up and running in Billingham which will produce thousands of tonnes of crops.

The state-of-the-art facility is now thriving, with the first crops already on sale in supermarkets.

And it's the first time British tomatoes will be grown all year round.

The area is also just weeks away from welcoming the prestigious National Premier Tennis League finals to the area.

Being staged at the David Lloyd centre in March, today we take a behind-the-scenes look at the event which will not only bring big names from the sport to the area - but encourage more of us to pick up a racquet and enjoy the sport ourselves.

Fitness and well-being are vital to Tees Pride's Wake Up To Your Health campaign.

Today we meet a sports development officer from Durham University's Queen's Campus who is working with local youngsters in the community to get them fitter for the future.

Plans for a new £42m 'superschool' in Yarm and specialist humanities status secured at the Norton School are just some of the latest developments in education we are looking at in detail today.

Today's Tees Pride edition is packed full of the energy.

Take a look at the people and projects helping put Stockton firmly on the map when it comes to a brighter, bolder future.
