Hemlington Works Project

Established in January 2004, Hemlington Works - is based in Hemlington Initiative Centre, Cass House Road, Hemlington, Middlesbrough.

Funded through Job Centre Plus European Co-Financing the project offers a seamless progression route into employment.

Residents in the Hemlington, Coulby Newham, Stainton and Thornton areas of Middlesbrough can access this one-stop-shop for career advice, job search, benefit advice as well as help with CVs and job interview preparation.

The service is available to all residents whether they are long-term unemployed, between jobs, in work, require further training, or receiving benefits.

Key partner organisations include Middlesbrough Council, Job Centre Plus, Working Links, Sure Start, At Work Recruitment and Pertemps Employment Alliance. Links have also been established with the Hemlington neighbourhood manager, Sarah Ross who ensures local people are aware of the project.

The project has to date placed 145 residents into work and 48 residents have gone into further education.

Project co-ordinator at Hemlington Works, Dawn Lloyd, ensures the smooth operation of the project, and works with local agencies and organisations to assist local residents into employment. Dawn Lloyd can be contacted at the project on 01642 576777.

Touch Project

The Touch Project was established in April 2004. Funded through Neighbourhood Renewal Funding the project works in partnership with Garlands Call Centre and supports existing staff and encourages new staff to develop themselves.

Staff can learn new skills that will be easily transferred into their day to day job such as communicating, dealing with people and problem solving.

The Touch project encompasses a range of activities:

* Mentors. Existing staff have trained to become mentors. Mentors work with staff mainly new starters to support them through work and personal issues. Educational Mentors visit schools to provide mentoring and support to pupils.

* Learning Resource Centre. A Learning Resource Centre has been established with books, journals, course materials to assist employees in their day to day role.

* Educational Mentors. Visits to schools to provide mentoring and support for pupils as well as assisting to pilot an e-mentor scheme (mentoring via e mail). Pupils can also visit Garlands Call Centre so they can learn more about the world of work.

* Recruitment. Garlands Call Centre work closely with Members of the Middlesbrough Network of Intermediaries project. The Middlesbrough Network of Intermediaries project is made up of practitioners from organisations who connect people to jobs, offer training to develop skills as well as advice and guidance. Members of the Network of Intermediaries are able to access information on Garland's recruitment process.
