Our pride at risk

May 19 2005

Mike Morgan, Evening Gazette

A volunteer crisis is threatening to scupper the future plans of an East Cleveland civic pride group.

Guisborough Town Pride has attracted admiration from far and wide over the last ten years for its major contribution to community projects.

Seating and displays of flowers, in tubs and raised beds, in the main Westgate Street have given huge pleasure to locals and visitors alike.

Many more conservation schemes have revitalised key local assets, including the picturesque Guisborough Beck.

But now three key posts have suddenly been left vacant due to ill health and family pressures.

Officers say there is a real danger the group could cease to exist if replacement volunteers do not come forward.

Secretary Lorna Buckle and treasurer Dorothy Coates have had to step down due to ill health and replacements are "desperately needed," says chairman Doreen Myers.

She said: "We just cannot let Guisborough Town Pride die.

"Nothing like this has happened in all the time we have been in existence."

To add to the woes, vice-chairman Pam Scott has also had to step down due to family pressures, but fortunately George Pearson has stepped into the breach.

Mrs Myers said: "If the worst comes to the worst this could jeopardise the whole future of our organisation.

"We are in our tenth year and have carried out numerous local tasks.

"These include flower beds in the town, replacing trees, the Guisborough Beck Project and the planned Gisborough Priory Project to build a visitor centre and gardens in the Priory grounds.

"We have got so much on the horizon which is now in jeopardy, including the Market Cross refurbishment and new stone troughs throughout the town centre."

GTP urgently needs replacement officers who can spare a few hours voluntary work each month.

Computer literacy would be an advantage, plus a knowledge of the area, but age is no bar. Mrs Myers said: "We have a very happy committee and we all get on and work well together. Lorna and Dorothy will help the new officers settle in and I thank them both for their dedicated hard work."
