Our competitive edge is getting keener by the day

Oct 18 2005

Ray Mallon, Mayor Of Middlesbrough, Evening Gazette

Mayor Ray Mallon

As anyone who took part in the recent Tees Pride run will testify, we all have a competitive streak.

Admittedly, it's more developed in some of us than others!

Towns and cities are just like people. They must compete to survive and prosper.

That is why I am very pleased to see Middlesbrough's competitive edge, illustrated by the developments featured in Tees Pride, getting keener by the day.

Middlesbrough needs to attract jobs, money and people to prosper.

Our strategy to do this must be based on three key activities: encouraging a vibrant and entrepreneurial private sector; maximising resources from government to regenerate the town; and improving what the town offers to residents and visitors.

In past years Middlesbrough was not the quickest out of the blocks in any of these activities.

But we are now very much up with the pace.

As these pages show we have world class industries and world class entrepreneurs on our doorstep.

They will receive our unequivocal support as they are the lifeblood of the local economy.

We are securing government funding for the new civic square and art gallery which are taking shape before our eyes; for the development of Middlehaven and the digital city; for schools across the town; and for housing and community renewal in central Middlesbrough.

We are modernising the town centre to ensure it can accommodate the 24-hour economy in a way which is structured, well-managed and which maximises benefits to local people and ensure that Middlesbrough's facilities appeal to the broadest spectrum of visitors.

All these developments are underpinned by efforts to improve the health and well-being of local people.

In this, as in other activities, Middlesbrough is more than making up for lost time.

I am delighted that Tees Pride is focusing on the change and renewal taking place in Middlesbrough.

It is playing a key role in shaping Middlesbrough's image on the national and international stage and helping us win the all-important race for investment and growth.
