Flower power is heaven scent

Aug 19 2006

By Nicola Robson, The Evening Chronicle

Marlene Ridsdale is very rarely out of her garden - come rain or shine.

The retired factory worker from South Stanley in County Durham is very proud of the garden she has nurtured for six years.

Marlene, 63, said: "I'm definitely green fingered and spend as much time as I can in the garden"

A gardening enthusiast from early childhood, Marlene has spent countless hours planting bulbs and flowers.

"The first bulbs I planted grew into fabulous red flowers, then the next were beautiful pink. It went on from there."

She now has two new wooden wheelbarrows, which she has restored, varnished and filled with flowers.

She also keeps an array of gnomes and figures in the garden to add an extra splash of colour and humour.

Her garden is beside a school and church so there are no end of passing folk to admire her lovely garden and commenting on her hard work.

"I have lots of different types of flowers in my garden; pansies, lily-of-the-valley, wallflowers, marigolds, hyacinths and petunias to mention a few."

"When I'm in the garden people stop and admire it and say they wish their plot was like mine."
