How much was your first pay packet and what did you spend it on? It was £14 per week from a summer job working on the fair on Scarborough sea front. I spent it on fish and chips, waffles and bed and breakfast. Are you a saver or a spender? Both, I have various arrangements and different levels of savings plans designed for short, mid and long-term requirements. What's your top financial tip? If you haven't got it - don't spend it. Be prepared to do without when you have to. Do you play the National Lottery? If so, what would you splash out on with the jackpot cash? I used to play but stopped about a year ago. If I had won I would have splashed out on more regular and more expensive holidays. What's been your worst spending decision? Every time I buy a car. You only have £5 left in the world - what would you spend it on? Telephone calls to all the "clients" who have benefited from "no hay - no pay" design schemes that I have provided for them - where if a job doesn't go ahead the client won't pick up any of the charges for the work done so far on that particular project. And finally I would buy my wife a lipstick. As a child did you save or spend your pocket money? Spend it of course, but sometimes a targeted purchase would require three or four weeks saving up before my parents would take pity and contribute the balance. Are you planning for the future? Do you have a pension, savings plan etc? Yes, I have a mid-term savings plan and several private pensions, and I am presently considering a property purchase through a SIPP - self invested pension plan - scheme. Do you live within your means? Yes, but sometimes this lapses and requires periods of painful denial, to restore equilibrium. What best sums up your attitude to money? I find that there is a tendency for money to create negative influences on your life. I try not to let it dictate or influence my ambitions. Generally I spend as wisely as I can, with the odd indulgence where I can manage. I like to feel that I could be prepared to enjoy/fulfil my ambitions with or without money. |
