Hippy chic

Jun 6 2005

By Shereen Low, The Journal

We're all embracing our inner hippy this summer, with loose, flowing styles.

This romantic and more feminine feel is definitely dominating the high street, inspired by celebrities such as Joss Stone and Beyoncé.

"Boho is perfect for the summer, as it uses light and floaty natural fabrics like cotton, linen and cheesecloth," explains Fleur Debruyne, Cosmopolitan's fashion assistant.

Be a boho bade with a flowing skirt

"The must-have skirt should be below-the-knee," says Fleur.

If you're a fan of white, there's plenty to choose from. Try Dorothy Perkins' sequin tier skirt, £30, Additions Direct's prairie skirt, £21, Hooch's full skirt, £45 at House of Fraser, Gateshead, or George at Asda's tiered skirt, £16.

Look at Laura Ashley's broderie anglaise skirt, £125, or Kookai's full-length flute skirt or full pleat circle skirt, £65 each.

Warehouse's patchwork floral full-length skirt, £40, and stone ribbon and crochet trim skirt, £35, Red Herring's multi-print tiered skirt, £28, and Butterfly by Matthew Williamson sequin tiered skirt, £65, both from Debenhams, Gateshead, are great if you prefer a splash of colour.

Pretty top

The essential top is the plain vest, or a pretty cheesecloth or embroidered top.

Gap, Topshop and Uniqlo stock basic camisole tops in a rainbow of shades.

J by Jasper Conran washed lining turquoise camisole, £30, Topshop's peach silk embroidered V-neck top, £40, and River Island's red gypsy cap-sleeved embroidered top, £19.99, are smart options for the evening.

Or check out George's embroidered top, £16, Dorothy Perkins' broderie anglaise camisole, £14, Principles' pink and white embroidered tunic, £27, Warehouse's oyster cutwork prairie camisole, £30, and Miss Selfridge's white plait lace camisole, £20.

Hippy accessories

Stock up on long necklaces, beads, chunky gold earrings and disc belts.

Head to Debenhams - Mood's gold bangles cost £15 each and EB by Erickson Beamon's tribe earrings are £15, or Accessorize for the Villa ethnic earrings, £12.

Or treat yourself to House of Fraser's Satellite orange and turquoise ethnic beaded necklace, £85, and Wendy Mink turquoise triple hoop earrings, £114.

Embellished shoes

Sequinned and beaded Indian-inspired flat shoes are the perfect footwear to finish off the boho vibe. "They can be worn with jeans or skirts," says Fleur.

Vicky Pepys will be back on June 13.
