Tees man found dead at plant

Jul 22 2002

By The Evening Gazette

A steeplejack who is believed to have fallen to his death was named today as a Teesside man.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said officers and an ambulance were called to Eggborough Power Station, near Selby, just before 10pm on Friday.

David Jamieson, 54, of South Bank, Middlesbrough, was found by colleagues inside the chimney stack at the power station.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

No-one was at Mr Jamieson's semi-detached home today.

The police spokesman said following their initial enquiries, the matter has now been passed on to the Health and Safety Executive for investigation.

Mr Jamieson was employed by Pendrick, an Edinburgh firm of specialist steeplejacks working as sub-contractors to Bierrum and Partners.

A married man, Mr Jamieson had worked frequently at the Eggborough site as a sub-contractor and had been employed by Pendrick for six years.

Today, Colin Watt, managing director of Pendrick, described the mood at his firm as "sombre."

Describing Mr Jamieson as "a very likeable man", he said: "He was a person I had a lot of respect for.

"Our industry isn't a large one. People know each other within the industry, not necessarily within just one company, and a lot of people will have known him.

"The company would very much want to record its condolences to his family and friends."

Mr Watt said there wasn't much he could add to the circumstances surrounding Mr Jamieson's death as an investigation was ongoing.

He said that in total, Mr Jamieson will have worked for Pendrick for around ten years, but in separate spells.

He confirmed that at Eggborough, he was working for Pendrick's parent company Bierrum.

A British Energy spokesman said the firm "would leave no stone unturned to identify the reasons for this tragic incident, the first fatality in the company's history."

A HSE spokeswoman confirmed it was investigating the incident
