Keith Lamb has delivered a ringing endorsement of Gareth Southgate's fledgling managerial career.
The appointment of Southgate as Middlesbrough manager was a risk, given his inexperience and lack of coaching badges. But chief executive Lamb insists he has been impressed by the 35-year-old's first month in charge, and says Southgate has taken to the job "like a duck to water".
"Gareth has been excellent and everything we expected," said Lamb, who is continuing to pursue top targets Sylvain Distin and Brett Emerton.
"He's firm but fair, which is exactly what you want in a manager.
"He's had tough decisions to make and made them, and he has everyone pulling in the same direction."
Targeting a top-six finish, Lamb added: "The players have enjoyed European football over the last two years and are disappointed we're missing out this season.
"We all know if we want to get back there, unless we win a cup competition, we have to finish in the top six or seven."
