Chance to say thanks to club

Aug 6 2006

By Steve Brown, The Sunday Sun

It might be Colin Cooper's benefit match, but Saturday's Riverside showdown with Chievo is so much more.

Four years ago the Middlesbrough stalwart almost quit football following the tragic death of his two-year-old son Finlay.

Support from fans helped him carry on, so Saturday offers him and his family a chance to say thanks.

It also provides an opportunity to raise cash for a variety of local charities and for Cooper to establish The Dragonfly Fund, in Finlay's memory.

But while all that might suggest football plays second fiddle, be warned; he has promised anything but a stroll in the park.

"It's a good game, our only home pre-season game and an important fixture," said Cooper.

"They finished seventh in Serie A so it should be a hard, competitive game, not just 22 old buggers having a kickabout on a Saturday afternoon.

"I'm very grateful that the club have given us this opportunity and we want to make it a really good occasion.

"It's an opportunity for me to say `Thank you' for all their support over the years and especially four years ago when we lost Finlay.

"We got hundreds of messages from all over the country but it was really the people of this football club who really made us feel that we weren't on our own.

"Hopefully we'll have a lovely Saturday which will benefit a lot of people.

"It's a wonderful industry that we're in and if we can do some good, then great."

  • Tickets priced £10 for adults and £5 for under-16s and over-65s are available online at mfc.co.uk, through a 24-hour hotline on 0845 070 1575 and from the Riverside box office.
