Whelan happy to have landed at Eagles

Mar 12 2003

Eric Paylor, Evening Gazette

Noel Whelan reflected on his loan move to Crystal Palace this week by declaring: "The time has come for me to leave Boro."

The big striker, who scored on his debut for the Eagles at Bradford last Saturday, believes that he needs a new challenge elsewhere.

Whelan has not had much of a chance on Teesside this season and revealed that a move to Palace would suit him perfectly.

He said: "The best thing would be for me to leave Boro and play my football elsewhere.

"I'd like to leave in the summer if the offer is right. If not, then I'll sit out my contract and go elsewhere afterwards.

"I'd definitely consider an offer from Crystal Palace.

"I wouldn't have come here if I didn't think it was the right club for me and a good place to play football."

Whelan, who has started just two Premiership games for Boro this season despite a lack of firepower, is on loan at Selhurst Park until the end of the season.

He said: "All managers have favourites and you can't do anything about it.

"I'm not the sort of person to get fazed and I know I can do my job. You have to take it on the chin, do your training and get on with it.

"A number of First Division clubs wanted me but as soon as Palace came in I jumped at the chance. I'm confident we can still reach the play-offs."
