Export orders keep growing

Nov 22 2005

By Evening Gazette

Since being named the North-East's top exporter, Middlesbrough-based Green Tyre Company has continued to notch up successes.

The firm, based at Riverside Industrial Park, produces puncture-proof tyres for bicycles, wheelchairs and industrial use.

It took the Export title at the Tees Valley heat and then went on to win the overall North-east crown for that category.

"Since winning the awards we've gone on to have our best year yet on the export front," said Colin Scarsi, managing director of Green Tyre Company.

When the company won, 75pc of sales were coming from overseas.

"We've just had an amazing October - where we hit 88pc for export," added Colin.

"That's at a time when it's traditionally quiet on the export front."

A key market for the company is the United States - where it has continued to increase sales. But this year the firm has increased sales in other overseas destinations, including Scandinavia.

Green Tyre has customers across the globe ranging from Manila to Manhattan and from Murmansk to Melbourne.

The company puts a large part of this success down to being prepared to travel to meet customers face to face.

This, it says, helps close the perceived gap of international trading and makes all parties feel that they are dealing locally.

This personal touch is also more important in some parts of the world than it is in the UK.

This ability to "shrink the globe" has been key to Green Tyre's export achievements.

The firm's tyres are created out of a high-tech process - but never at the expense of the environment.

The process is clean, non-carcinogenic and CFC-free - releasing no harmful toxins into the environment.

The product lasts longer than rubber and when it eventually wears down it can be recycled.

"Winning these awards has really helped the company," added Colin.

"Winning the overall North-east title was great.

"But the awards are also great for Teesside," he added.

"They show the good work being done here in our community - and it's also a fantastic night out!"
