Passions runs high for Sally

Jun 25 2005

By The Evening Chronicle

Scandal is set to hit Skelthwaite as nursing drama Where The Heart Is returns to our screens.

The Boothe family are faced with a teenage pregnancy, a house fire and a frenzy of family problems in the ITV1 show from Sunday.

Passions run high in the Pennines as the teen romance between Megan Boothe, played by Holly Grainger, and Luke Kirkwall, played by Christian Cooke, continues apace.

But just as their relationship sets itself on an even keel, the couple get a shock when Megan finds out she's pregnant.

It is some time before the teenager brings herself to tell her family what's happened, at first entrusting her secret to village newcomer, nurse Kim Blakeney, played by Denise Van Outen.

And when she eventually plucks up the courage to tell her mum, Sally Boothe, it's a bit of a shock, says actress Samantha Giles, who plays Sally.

"She's always felt she's very close to her children and then obviously Megan tells her she's pregnant," she explains.

"I think partly she's devastated Megan hasn't been able to talk to her about the fact she's now having a sexual relationship with her boyfriend.

"Although she's a nurse and she's had to deal with teenage pregnancy many times before, when it comes to her own family it's different.

"Even though the right thing to do would be to remain calm and practical about it, she's actually not."

Sally gets heavy-handed with Megan, banning her from seeing Luke and hinting it would be best if she had an abortion, something which astounds her husband Billy, played by former Bill actor Andrew Paul.

"It throws up interesting things about their relationship," says the 33-year-old. "What Megan is going through is kind of similar to what Sally and Billy went through, in that they had their children very, very young."

As well as Megan's pregnancy, the Boothes are in for a bit of bother on the marriage front. Sally begins to feel unsupported by Billy when he is promoted at work and starts to spend more time at the factory.

Temptation is blown Sally's way when former Goddard's boss Simon Goddard arrives back in town from Australia and comes to stay with the Boothes.

If that's not enough drama to deal with, more is yet to come when the family are involved in a house fire later on in the series - whether Sally manages to get her family out in time remains a closely-guarded secret though.

Samantha started her stint on the popular drama in 2003 and firm friendships have been forged between many of the actors. The on-screen closeness between Samantha and co-star Lesley Dunlop, who plays community nurse Anna Kirkwall, continues after the cameras stop rolling in the West Yorkshire countryside.

"I've been renting a flat up in Holmfirth near where Lesley lives, so we'll meet and have a drink after we've finished filming," says Samantha.

With such a close-knit cast, does she feel for newcomers - such as Denise Van Outen and Richard Mylan, who plays loveable rogue Danny Flint - when they turn up on set for the first time?

"Oh yes. Everyone gets really nervous, you sort of feel for Denise. But Richard was also new so at least there were two of them to make each other feel better."

Based in Windsor, Berkshire, Samantha, who married sales executive Nick Moore in 2000, has had plenty of experience being the new girl.

She's racked up appearances in Dangerfield, Coronation Street and the film Midnight Man opposite Hollywood heart-throb Rob Lowe.

She later made her name as glamorous landlady and two-timing vicar's wife Bernice Thomas in Emmerdale.

After five years on the soap, Bernice ran off to work on a cruise ship - and Samantha says she has no regrets about leaving the soap.

Where The Heart Is again boasts a number of high-profile cameo appearances including Prunella Scales, Elaine Paige, Frances Barber, Jan Frances and Edward Woodward.

And she's got one more suggestion for the show's bosses when they are organising more stars to feature in future episodes of the popular programme.

"I wouldn't mind Kevin Costner," she laughs.
