Here's a show for the family

Jul 25 2006

By Gordon Barr, The Evening Chronicle

The stars are set to sparkle for a Chronicle charity night. Entertainment Editor Gordon Barr has the details.

Imagine Sunday night at the London Palladium transported to Tyneside. That's what is promised in an evening of entertainment set for Newcastle later this summer - and it's all for a good cause.

Stars on Sunday at the Journal Tyne Theatre will raise money for the Chronicle's Sunshine Fund, which helps sick and needy children in the region.

A host of performers are set to take to the stage, including Leah Bell, Bobby Pattinson and Johnny de Little.

Leah is one of the region's best-known and enduring entertainers and is co-ordinating the show.

"We've got dancers, singers, comedians - the whole lot," she says excitedly. And we have a special appearance from Tony Washington, who does a Bobby Thompson tribute.

"He is so accurate, it's alarmingly frightening. He does really look and sound like him.

"We also have the Sandra Reavley Theatre School, so there'll be lots of stuff from children on the night. With the likes of Bobby Pattinson providing the comedy, I think there's something for everyone."

Of course, Leah herself will also be taking to the stage: "I'm going to do some rock 'n' roll stuff and some comedy, and my Angel of the North tribute, which seems to be very popular. It's a tribute, but let's just say it's a little bit disparaging about the statue.

"Then there's my impersonation of The Crazy Frog. The premise for the night is to have the kind of entertainment you used to get at the London Palladium on a Sunday night.

"There's a bit of everything for everyone. It's the kind of entertainment television producers would call old-fashioned. But it's not at all.

"It's family entertainment. You can take your children along and not be frightened of them seeing or hearing something you don't want them to.

"This kind of show remains eternally popular."

Much of Leah's time over the next couple of months will be spent putting the final touches to the production - though she has other matters in hand too.

"I'm doing some building work so you'll probably see me out and about in my personalised hard-hat," she laughs.

"Who knows, I may even include a Bob the Builder parody in Stars on Sunday!"

The show features Bobby Pattinson, Leah Bell, Johnny de Little, Jason King, The Peter Donegan Band, The Miami Dance Machine, Tony Washington and the Sandra Reavley Theatre School.

Stars on Sunday takes place at the Journal Tyne Theatre on September 17. The show will start at 7.30pm and tickets are £10 each, available from the theatre's box office.
