When fans travel from Bognor to see a Castleton lad at Boro, you must have something and, a year on from Fame Academy, his fan base is so across the board, you couldn't find a more diverse audience. Pre-interval was mellow time - guitar, keyboards, largely self-penned songs and one helluva voice - you could hear the spines tingling; the rocky second half was a world away with ballsy support from band RICCARDI. Among the more surreal moments were Wheatus inspired Bolton Dirtbag sung in George Formby style, a 6ft dancing bear - honest - and, fabulously, a fan playing air guitar on his walking stick. A personal highlight was Sex And Love - a bold and beefy new song with more hooks than an angler's tackle. He even hinted at releasing it next year, which could yet return him to chart land, despite the shoddy treatment he's had so far from the unforgiving music machine. His fans adore him and he's damn good at what he does. Which makes you think a major record label might still be missing a trick here. Keep this up and that situation should change. Impressive. |
