Scud rocks Popp in soulful epic

Jul 3 2003

By Evening Gazette

The Wimbledon rain has forced the epic five-set clash between Mark "The Scud" Philippoussis and Alexander Popp into a second day.

Aussie Philippoussis was getting the better of his German opponent having stormed back from two sets down but the pair were locked together at 4-6 4-6 6-3 6-3 and 2-2 in the deciding set when play was stopped for the day shortly before 7.30pm last night.

Popp, a quarter-finalist on his only previous appearance at the championships three years ago, made a brilliant start.

But the Australian coped with the four rain delays better and earned his first break of the Popp serve in the sixth game of the third set before taking it 6-3.

And he stepped up the pace in a vintage fourth set in which he dropped just two points on his own serve.

Popp served his seventh double fault to be broken in the third game then Philippoussis broke again

The pair were set to resume on Court One today following the match between Andy Roddick and Jonas Bjorkman.

Roger Federer and Sjeng Schalken, who are also set to meet today, will have been pleased with 24 hour delay, which allowed them extra time to overcome their injuries.
