Johnston ready to fly high

Jul 26 2005

By Doug Moscrop, The Journal

Middleham trainer Mark Johnston hopes to be flying high with his lightly-raced colt Brahminy Kite for the rest of the season.

He has done nothing wrong so far in only four racecourse appearances and looks a genuine St Leger contender after his gallant fourth in the Budweiser Irish Derby in which he tried to make all the running.

That run came only nine days after running a blinder in the King Edward VII Stakes at the Royal meeting. It was his first run for 10 months, having suffered a stress fracture to a hind leg last autumn.

Brahminy Kite should continue to progress with experience and, though he is likely to prefer a stiffer test, he sets the standard for the ABN Amro Stakes on the first day of Glorious Goodwood.

The one he has to beat is The Geezer who may have finished ahead of him at York but for being hampered by the winner, Plea Bargain, but Brahminy Kite is open to more improvement than his rival.

Johnston always has a strong raiding party for one of his favourite meetings and he holds other winning opportunities with Swift Sailor and Prince Of Light.

Swift Sailor's style of running will be suited to this sharp track. He returned to form after disappointing in the Northumberland Plate when third to High Action at Lingfield.

Stable companion Golden Quest was ahead of him, just as he was in the Ascot Stakes at York, but I expect a form reversal in the Tatler Summer Season Stakes.

Prince Of Light shaped well against previous winners on his Doncaster debut and showed a lot of pace until lack of an outing told. He will come on a lot for that and is preferred to Laith for the Turf Club EBF Maiden Stakes.

Autumn Glory ran two sound races in France following his successful reappearance in the Doncaster Mile and was back to winning ways in a Group Three contest at Lingfield on his latest run. There has been rain at Goodwood and that will help him as he steps up to Group Two company in the Betfair Cup.

Masta Plasta won the Norfolk Stakes in decisive fashion and can defy his Group penalty and confirm York superiority over Strike Up The Band in the Betfair Molecomb Stakes.

Selective hasn't won for three years and can run a stinker at times. That was the case at Newbury on Saturday and at Doncaster in May, but a much better effort was his third to Kamanda Laugh at Newmarket and, if he can reproduce that form, he is poised to run a big race in the Darnley Stakes.

Evaluator won in the style of an improver at Newbury and, with Kieren Fallon booked, I expect him to be involved in the finish of the Summer Stakes.

River Lena has run two solid races in defeat and was unlucky to come up against a potentially useful type in Snow Crystal at Yarmouth. She can make it third time lucky in the EBF Holderness Pony Club Maiden Stakes at Beverley.

Sir Sandrovitch is not the most reliable performer but has been performing more consistently of late and has a plum draw for the Ladies Day Handicap.
