Swindon Town 1, Hartlepool United 1

Pool's dream season goes on and on - and it might yet end with a glorious fairytale finish in Division One.

Neale Cooper's heroes got the point they needed to secure sixth spot in Division Two and a place in the play-offs and they now face Bristol City in the semi-finals.

The first leg will be at Victoria Park on Saturday with the return leg at Ashton Gate on May 19.

Nobody expected Pool to make such an impression on Division Two after promotion from Division Three last season.

They were favourites with the bookies for a swift return to the basement division.

Instead, hot Scot Cooper has taken Pool to a new level and is fast earning a reputation as one of the most promising managers in the land.

A draw was enough for both sides yesterday, but there was no way the game was the carve-up Port Vale fans feared.

Vale needed to win at Rushden and hope there was a winner at the County Ground to overtake either Pool or The Robins.

Pool fell behind to a first-half Sammy Igoe goal and levelled through man-of-the-moment Adam Boyd, who bagged his 12th goal in 10 games. A delighted Cooper said: "These boys have set new standards at the club. Right from the first day I walked in, there was a togetherness and that has carried us so much further forward.

"They deserve the praise and success. We started the season on a high at Peterborough and it promises to end on a high as well.

"They are one of the fittest bunch of players around and the fans appreciate everything they have done all season - and the players appreciate the fans just the same.

"It's hard for some people to take in what we have achieved - and it is for me as well. I was quite emotional right after the game."

Pool fell behind after just six minutes. A short corner worked on the right saw Sammy Igoe float a cross into the area and it bounced into the far side of the net.

There were a couple of scary moments for Pool. And they knew that - with news filtering through that Port Vale were winning at Rushden - they could ill afford to go two down.

Their best spell in the first half came in the final five minutes and they carried the momentum into the second period.

Mark Tinkler headed over from a Westwood flick, Tinkler saw a volley deflected wide and Westwood had a header hacked off the line.

But Boyd stooped to head home from Hugh Robertson's cross and from then on they were never in any danger of missing out. But now can the impossible become possible? We shall wait and see . . .
