Vijay's Tiger talk

Oct 7 2004

By Alan Hedley, The Journal

World No 1 Vijay Singh claimed yesterday that problems with the mind and body are behind Tiger Woods' fall from golfing invulnerability.

The Fijian and South African Ernie Els have leapfrogged the 28-year-old at the top of the official world rankings following his continued loss of form.

Woods appeared as if he was destined to become the greatest golfer of all time after winning four successive Majors and being the number one for over four years.

But Singh is now rightly the top man in golf and will be trying to illustrate that at this week's Dunhill Cup event in Scotland.

After a breathtaking season, which has seen him bank over $9.5m (£5.3m) in prize money with eight victories, the 41-year-old had some words of wisdom as to Woods' troubles.

He believes that his rival's downfall has arisen from his inability to focus his mind and adjust his swing the older he gets. "I'm sure he's going to start winning sooner or later but at the moment I think his focus is elsewhere," said Singh.

"I think it's his body change a little bit and his golf swing change. As you get older you have to keep adjusting to your golf swing. I think your body does not stay the same.

"When he first came on to the scene, he was extremely strong. I'm not saying he isn't strong now but you do slow down a little bit. The golf swing has to match your body ability.

"I don't think he has progressed that way. There's been a big change in his body mannerisms and his golf swing.

"You know I have adjusted accordingly and for the better and I don't think he has done that.

"I think his body and his golf swing do not match like it did some five years or four years ago so he has to adjust that. I'm sure once he figures that one out he'll be okay."

World No 2 Ernie Els cannot catch Singh at the top of the rankings over the three courses - Kingsbarns, St Andrews and Carnoustie - this week.

But the South African can overtake Europe's Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie and become the biggest money-earner in European Tour history.

Montgomerie will be partnered by supermodel Jodie Kidd this week. Spectators are no doubt going to have to battle the wind and rain but they are also, no doubt, going to be blown away by the sight of Padraig Harrington and Kevin Costner, Thomas Levet and Michael Douglas, Paul Casey and Hugh Grant and Ian Poulter and Dennis Hopper.

Ryder Cup star David Howell will team up with actor Samuel L Jackson and he was delighted to be paired with the star of Pulp Fiction.

"I'm playing with Samuel L Jackson so maybe that's as good a sign as anything that I have moved up a level," said the Englishman.
