Boxing: Gary returns to roots

May 4 2004

By John Gibson, The Evening Chronicle

Gary McCrory is going on a sentimental journey tomorrow night back to the Blackhill Comrades Club in Consett to stage a Booker ABC show.

"The McCrory family will forever be associated with the venue which is why we're going back," Gary told me. "It's where Glenn, Shaun and myself all made our amateur debuts.

"For some reason the word got about that I was actually boxing again and I've been inundated with calls but that's ridiculous. It's not that sort of return to Blackhill. I'm not that daft!"

McCrory reckons that three Booker fighters have virtually sold out the show themselves - Steven Lambert, who is having a return with Dunston's Robert Ismay, David Cowley, who is making his debut, and Scott Bell.
