Rowing: Earmarked for the top

Dec 2 2003

By Evening Gazette

Teesside teenage rower Kristina Stiller has been earmarked as one of the country's top young prospects.

The Tees Rowing Club member from Low Worsall, near Yarm, has been invited to attend the Great Britain world class potential camp in Switzerland the week before Christmas.

Kristina will have a week of intensive training under the guidance of top Great Britain rowing coaches.

And she will be aiming for a place in the GB team for either the Junior European Championships in Ravenna, Italy, or the GB team competing in the Junior World Championships in Banyoles in Spain, both in July, 2004.

The 16-year-old caught the eye of the selectors at the GB junior trials at Boston for rowers aged 16 to 18.

She took third place in her category with a time of 21min 50sec.

Kristina, who only started sculling a year ago with Tees RC, has been enjoying great success in recent weeks, notably winning the women's junior 18 single scull section of the York Small Boats Head of the River event.

The race, contested over a 5km course on the River Ouse, attracted more than 350 entries.

Kristina was also successful in the women's junior 18 double sculls.
