Trout topics: England call-up for Teesside trio

Oct 18 2003

Andrew Wilkinson, Evening Gazette

A top Teesside trout fishing trio will test their skills on the international stage after being called up for their England debuts.

The Fishhawks team of Derek Grabham, his son Darren, and Terry Sharp earned their place in next year's European Championships, by winning the Airflo Classic.

After qualifying for the final by winning at Lockwood Beck, they clinched the national crown at Eleanor Fishery in Northamptonshire where Darren and Terry each caught 12 fish, and Derek, nine.

"To be chosen to fish for England is brilliant," said Derek, 53. "We were delighted just to win the competition, because it takes some doing.

"You have to beat some very good teams just to qualify for the final, and it's even tougher to win it, so we are thrilled.

"It's our biggest every success, as we have only won minor events before this."

The trio will fish three times for England - on one of the home waters, as well as in France and Belgium.

TROUT are feeding all day at LOCKWOOD BECK, with rainbows to 6lb 12oz and blues to 4lb 8oz being caught.

Dennis Woods of Middlesbrough caught 42 fish in two days, mainly on Pheasant Tail, Graham Hill caught 24 over two sessions from the bank, while several other anglers had over ten fish a session.

Drys, nymphs and lures are all catching, with some of the top patterns being: Black Fritz, Shipmans, black or olive Buzzers, Pheasant Tail, Hoppers, Black and Peacock Spider.

Four-fish day tickets cost £19, while a two-fish ticket is just £13. Boats cost £8 a day.

THE east and west ends of the dam have provided the most consistent fishing at SCALING DAM.

George Solomon, and his son, from Brotton used legered powerbait and worm cocktail on a long trace to catch a 4lb 4oz rainbow among an eight fish limit.

Fly anglers also took their share, B Lees of Teesville, fishing from the dam, used a weighted Montana to catch 19 trout.

In the past week 107 anglers caught 307 rainbows, with 11 anglers taking eight fish limits.

CLIVE Lambert of Stockton caught at 16lb 1oz rainbow, the biggest fish of the week from STONEBRIDGE. And Rob Smith of Darlington had the second biggest, at 15lb 7oz. The rod average is 4.4 on the specimen lake, and 5 on Hergill, while top patterns include: Orange Fritz, Yellow Bloodworm, Cat's Whisker, Hopper, Gold Bead PTN.

FOUR more rainbows around the 10lb mark have been caught at LEIGHTON RESERVOIR in a week in which 100 anglers caught 250 trout. Dawson's Olive has again been a key pattern.

AT JUBILEE, two rainbows of over 18lb were caught, while the rod average is 3.3.

Paul Hull of Evenwood caught two 14lb fish, taking his tally of doubles for the season to 22.

The best patterns include: Cat's Whisker, Dawson's Olive, Viva, Bloodworm and PTN.

AT THORNTON STEWARD, the fish are back on top and rising freely.

Pheasant Tails, Black Buzzers and Bibios all caught fish with the Dawson's Olive the top lure.

The rod average was, not surprisingly, down from last weeks exceptional figure, but still a good 3.1 with fish to 3.5 lbs.
