Undeterred by selection blow

Mar 10 2005

Eric Paylor, Evening Gazette

Ultra runner Sharon Gayter is to compete in the prestigious 100 kilometres Anglo-Celtic Plate in Dublin - despite having failed to win international selection.

The Guisborough athlete had to drop out halfway through the official trial in South Wales when she suffered an asthma attack.

It led to the England selectors turning elsewhere in selecting a three-woman team. But Sharon, who holds the record for the Anglo-Celtic Plate, is undeterred.

She said: "The selection race at Barry was over 40 miles, and I had an asthma attack after 20 miles.

"The cold weather brought it on, and it was the end of the race for me.

"It was also the end for the selectors because they left me out of the team and selected two women who have never run 100k before.

"It's disappointing because I've done it before and they know what they will get from me.

"But I've planned to run the race in Dublin and I've trained for it, I'll still be going as an individual because it's an open race as well."

Sharon will run in Phoenix Park on April 2, bidding to repeat her success when the race was last run there in 1999. On that occasion she won the event for England and set the course record of 8hr 27min which still stands.

Sharon said: "Training has been going very well. I have just spent two weeks warm weather training in the Algarve, paid for by the Elite Athletes Bursary Scheme at the University of Teesside where I am studying for my Masters in Sport and Exercise.

"While there I was training in excess of 100 miles per week and it was good to be a full-time athlete for a couple of weeks."

Sharon aims to use the Anglo-Celtic Plate to build up for future events.

Her main target is the World 24 Hours Championships in Worsach, Austria, on July 16-17, though there are still funding issues to finalise.
