Manchester United 5, Fulham 1

Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted Manchester United have made no progress in their attempt to lure Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich.

Ferguson, whose side began the season with a 5-1 hammering of sorry Fulham at Old Trafford, has made the England international his major transfer target before the window closes on August 31.

Hargreaves is known to be keen on the switch from the Bundesliga champions but Bayern are refusing publicly to contemplate the transfer, not even if United come up with £34m, according to general manager Uli Hoeness.

One potential chink of light emerged when Hargreaves was not named on the bench for Munich's game with Bochum.

However, as far as Ferguson is aware the German giants remain implacably opposed to Hargreaves' departure.

"Nothing really has changed," said Ferguson. "We are trying hard but Bayern are proving very stubborn and resistant, which I can understand.

"We can only do our best and that is what we will keep doing because we are trying to build a strong squad of players."

Not that Ferguson's side showed any sign of needing Hargreaves against the Cottagers.

Having called on United to make a fast start to the new campaign, Ferguson's side rocketed into a four-goal lead inside 20 minutes.

Louis Saha set the hosts on their way, with Ian Pearce netting an own goal before Wayne Rooney fired home a third, then crossed for Cristiano Ronaldo to net a sensational fourth. It was the first time Rooney and Ronaldo had appeared together since their infamous clash at the World Cup and the reaction of both players suggested there is none of the bitterness reported to be between the pair.

Ferguson confirmed Michael Carrick should be available for next weekend's trip to Watford after returning to training following his recent ankle problem.

However, United's £18.6m new boy will miss Wednesday's game with Charlton, along with Rooney and Scholes, who begin their three-match suspensions.

Ryan Giggs could also be a doubt after being the victim of a stamp by Michael Brown which only warranted a yellow card.

"It was a bad tackle," said Ferguson, who made his views known in typically forceful fashion.

With Rooney adding a fifth on the hour and United spurning a series of chances to increase their lead further, Coleman has much more to worry about just now.

"They steamrollered us," he admitted. "We hardly got hold of the ball in midfield, and when we did, we gave it away far too easily.

"In those circumstances, against quality like that, you are going to get punished. We conceded in the first 10 minutes, then the wheels came off."
