Jose Mourinho paid tribute to his champions as they began their season in impressive style. Chelsea beat 10-man Manchester City 3-0 at Stamford Bridge with goals from John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba. Mourinho said: "We didn't play well - we played very well. "There were 10 minutes at the start of the second half when our quality dropped but we played very well for 80 minutes. "Defensively we were perfect and the intensity of our offensive game was very high. "The quality of our passing was good. We scored three and we could easily have scored four or five. We had the chances. We dominated and beat a good team." Chelsea go to Middlesbrough and Blackburn for their next two games - two fixtures they lost last season. Mourinho said: "It's always important to win the first game. "We have two difficult matches away from home at places where we lost last season. "Not winning this home game would have put pressure on us away from home." Terry opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a header from an Arjen Robben free-kick, and the Chelsea boss revealed how his captain had overcome a groin injury to play. Mourinho confirmed Dutch defender Khalid Boulahrouz had passed his medical and should complete his transfer. The Chelsea boss refused to comment on the Ashley Cole saga. He also said William Gallas would train with the Blues today. City played the last 27 minutes with 10 men after Italian striker Bernardo Corradi was sent off on his debut for two bookings. His first yellow card was for a foul on Paulo Ferreira and his second for a reckless challenge on Michael Essien. Essien reacted by pulling Corradi's hair and was booked. |
