Carlisle United 3, Leyton Orient 1

Aug 21 2006

By Mike Corry, The Journal

Carlisle have found the transition from League Two to League One less daunting than they had probably feared, with a return of seven points from the first four games.

The pleasing aspect of this comprehensive win against one of the other promoted sides was the finding of their scoring touch, which finally complemented the quality of their football to provide a winning combination.

And it was little surprise the goals flow coincided with Michael Bridges' return to the kind of form he enjoyed last season, the former Newcastle and Sunderland forward contributing to all the goals.

But the major plaudits will be bestowed on Kevin Gall whose two clinical finishes took his goal tally to three for the season, as the former Magpies trainee has taken to life in Cumbria like a duck to water.

And first team coach Greg Abbott could not hide his delight in a performance where the hard work on the training pitch finally came together.

"I said before the game that we thought we played some great stuff last week (at Yeovil), carved a lot of goal-scoring opportunities and today we've done exactly the same if not better and scored some wonderful goals," said Abbott. "Kevin Gall was brilliant with two fantastic goals. His first goal was magnificent when Bridges picked him out with a curling pass, as he did last week and I think Bridgey must now be his best pal.

"But we need Gally in there because he has that little bit of pace, he can get behind defenders and he's gone in and done exactly the job that we wanted him to do all week."

A wonderful flowing move opened the scoring on 23 minutes when Bridges took a Karl Hawley knockdown in his stride before releasing a perfectly placed pass into the path of Gall, who ran clear before curling the ball round Garner as he went to ground.

Four minutes into the second half Carlisle put themselves into a comfortable position with another well worked goal.

Bridges made space on the left to find Gall on the edge of the box and the deftest of back heels released Hawley to toe poke past the advancing Garner.

On 60 minutes the game was put beyond doubt when Paul Murray won the ball just inside the Orient half to find Bridges, who again provided a defence-splitting pass for Gall to slot the ball home.

A minute later Gall had a chance to complete a hat-trick as Hawley was pulled down by John Mackie but the moment of glory was lost as Garner pulled off an outstanding save from the penalty.

When Lee Steele headed in a consolation goal on 68 minutes from a Wayne Corden cross Carlisle were subjected to a nervy finale and Westwood avoided an increase in tension with a stunning save from Donny Barnard as Orient found a little self-belief.

But it was Carlisle who finished the stronger with Murray firing wide before a save from Garner denied Derek Holmes.
