Carlisle 3, Leyton Orient 1

Aug 20 2006

By The Sunday Sun

Just after the hour mark striker Kevin Gall had the match ball in his grasp.

After two brilliant goals he stepped to convert a penalty kick, but Orient keeper Glen Ganar dived full length to his left to turn the ball away for a corner.

It was the only blemish on a fine afternoon for former Welsh Under-21 international Gall.

But they should give him the match ball anyway for his overall contribution in the 90 minutes when Carlisle laid the ghost of last season.

They failed to beat Orient in League Two, taking one point from their two meetings.

But on this occasion they underlined why they were promoted as champions, with Orient in third place.

The Orient keeper had already pulled off a fine save from Chris Lumsdon's 18-yard half-volley when Gall struck.

A knock-down from Karl Hawley, a sweeping first time ball out to the left from Michael Bridges, and Gall was away like a hare. He ran 40 yards before steering a shot across and over the keeper from 15 yards.

Carlisle lost skipper Kevin Gray four minutes later, with Karl Arnison coming on and the defence reshuffled.

But it took 33 minutes for Orient to manage a goal attempt and a few minutes longer for home keeper Keiron Westwood to save from Lee Steele.

Three minutes into the second half a clever Bridges flick and Gall, working his way along the edge of the box, suddenly back-heeled the ball to find Hawley in space to score from 14 yards.

A square Orient defence was caught again in the 59th minute when Chris Billy and Bridges combined to send Gall clear through the middle.

Again he finished perfectly, beating the keeper just inside his right post.

When Orient skipper John Mackie brought down Hawley, Gall should have made the win more emphatic.

Orient's immediate response was to bring on three substitutes and look a bit livelier going forward.

Lively enough anyway for Lee Steele to head in Wayne Corden's 67th-minute cross and for goalkeeper Westwood to stop a blockbuster from Donny Barnard.

Orient manager Martin Ling said: "We only performed for 25 minutes after we were second best for a good hour. If the penalty had gone in it could have been five or six."
