The X Factor journey

Nov 8 2005

By Evening Gazette

October 15th - The final 12

Performed: Elton John's hit Something About The Way You Look Tonight.

What the judges said

Simon Cowell: "What I love about Carl and Andy is that they have earned the right to be here. They love to entertain an audience, they have a great chemistry, they are fantastic singers."

Louis Walsh: "Carl and Andy you're absolutely great. That was a great performance. I liked you from day one. You picked a great song, you've got a good image, you have the whole package. I think you are going to go a long long way."

Sharon Osbourne: "You're very genuine and I like that about you. You don't pretend to be anything you are not. I really like you guys."

**********

October 22nd - The final 11

Performed: Desperado by Eagles

What the judges said

Simon Cowell: "What I like about you is there's a sort of honesty. You don't need any gimmicks. You came here with no chips on your shoulders."

Louis Walsh: "You're just naturals, you really deserve your break. There is a big gap in the market for this sort of act."

Sharon Osbourne: "Oh guys, you have such a natural way. It's not forced. You're the English Everly Brothers."

**********

October 29nd - The final 10

Performed: Cover of U2's Angel of Harlem

What the judges said

Simon Cowell: "It was a risky thing to do to take on a U2 song. You had fun, you're great entertainers, you give it 110pc. Just to see you up looking great, sounding great and enjoying yourselves is what it's all about."

Louis Walsh: " I think you are going to have a great career in music. I wasn't crazy about the song, I do not think it really suited you. But I think you've got a great talent and think you'll be very successful."

Sharon Osbourne: "I didn't like the song before you sang it - now I love the song. A great vocal performance from both of you but Andy you made it your own and are really getting into it."

**********

November 5th - The final 9

Performed: Roberta Flack ballad The First Time Ever I saw Your Face.

What the judges said

Simon Cowell: "It was a risk that paid off and, if nothing else, you've proved to the audience at home and everybody here that you're just really, really good singers and that's what it's all about."

Louis Walsh: "You just proved why Simon picked you for this competition. To do that with no gimmicks, no backing track, no nothing - you've proved to me that you've got real talent."

Sharon Osbourne: "You're very brave and you did really well with a song that is extremely hard to deliver."

**********

November 12th - The final 8

Performed: Barnstorming version of Bon Jovi's Livin' on a Prayer

What the judges said

Simon Cowell: "The great thing about these guys is they're prepared to take a risk. I was nervous during the week thinking 'was this the right thing to do' but I think it worked. I thought they had fun tonight - I thought you pulled it off. It was good."

Louis Walsh: "I'm a big fan of Journey South. He (Simon) gave you a really tough task this week and I think you pulled it off. It was a little bit karaoke here and there but I think you are great. I think you're really, really good, I think you will make the final and I think you are going to have a great, great career."

Sharon Osbourne: "I like the song, it got everybody up, it's a great 80s rock song everybody knows. Andy, you seemed really comfortable - Carl, I still don't feel you're 100pc comfortable in your own body yet. You always look a bit frightened and you know what, it's rock 'n roll - enjoy it, enjoy what you do. You needn't be afraid because you played really well with the guitar solo. There's your brother on the other end going for it, doing his Mick Jagger, and you are like a deer in the headlights. Relax."

**********

November 19th - The final 7

Performed: Robbie Williams' classic Angels

Simon Cowell: "I think Louis Walsh has shown he couldn't even judge a hamster show. What are you talking about? That was fantastic!"

Louis Walsh: "I really like Journey South. I think they have great talent and voices, but this song, it was a lazy, lazy choice Simon. Anyone is going to sing this song in any pub tonight all over the UK. I wouldn't have done it. You are better than the song boys."

Sharon Osbourne: "I love you! I thought the song was amazing, you guys are getting better and better, more confident - I love you!"

**********

November 26th - The final 6

Performed: A cover of U2 hit 'Still Havn't Found What I'm Looking For'

Simon Cowell: You are whine-free, rock solid and get on with the job. You take on whatever is thrown at you and you are gimmick free.

Louis Walsh: It's a great song by a great Irish band. You were very convincing and I think you are never gonna have to go back to your day jobs.

Sharon Osbourne: It makes me smile when I see you two because you have grown so much in a short space of time. You have the likeability factor.

December 3rd - The final 5

Peformed: Song one - Daniel Powter's Bad Day.

Simon Cowell: I keep thinking I ought to be negative one week and I can't. It's just great.

Louis Walsh: Great song choice. Good to hear you singing a new song. I can tell you're pretty nervous, though. Well done.

Sharon Osbourne: I don't think it's gonna be a bad day, it's gonna be a good day for you.

Song two - Elton John's Candle In The Wind.

Simon Cowell: That is the X Factor. Congratulations.

Louis Walsh: Guys, a really, really unusual choice of song, no tricks, just great harmony, you absolutely pulled it off. Well done.

Sharon Osbourne: This song just represents one thing to me and whenever I hear it I just get terribly sad and I don't want to be sad on a Saturday night. I can't hear this song without feeling horribly sad.

**********

December 10th - The final 4

Performed: Song one - Acoustic version of You're In My Heart by Rod Stewart.

Simon Cowell: "Week in, week out, you keep doing what you do best. You haven't changed one iota. I really hope you make the final."

Louis Walsh: "Everybody loves the two boys. Andy and Carl are two of the nicest guys you are going to meet. Every week they progress. Every week the North of England is voting for them. They are going to have a huge career."

Sharon Osbourne: "I thought it was really good. Love the Rod Stewart song, you won me over. You know I love you, anyway."

Song two - The Beatles' classic Let It Be with back-up from a gospel choir.

Simon Cowell: "This can be a very difficult business, the music business, and you meet some horrors along the way. You have paid your dues. You have played the terrible clubs and you almost gave it up six months ago.It has been my pleasure and privilege to work with two of the nicest people I have ever known."

Louis Walsh: "Andy and Carl, you have come a long way, you have worked really hard. Great song, great performance. You deserve to be in the last four."

Sharon Osbourne: "That has to be your best performance to date. You look fabulous tonight - stunning."

**********

December 17th - The final 3

Performed: Song one - George Michael and Elton John's 'Don't let the sun go down on me'

Simon Cowell: I've been doing this job a long, long time and thought I was becoming a bit jaded but it's such a buzz to see you guys and hear you on the night just banging it home and delivering - fantastic.

Louis Walsh: You are two of the nicest guys we have met in the competition. A great song, really well performed...you deserve to be here, well done.

Sharon Osbourne: Yesterday when you were at the rehearsal, I saw you, Carl, playing the piano. I thought it was sensational and you should have kept it, but Simon (Cowell) was right as usual, it was better this way. You are singing great, by the way.

Song two - Happy Christmas (War is Over) by John Lennon

Simon Cowell: I'm in a good mood now, I feel really happy! I think it's what you guys do best - it was a simple song, you sang it brilliantly, you were having a great time and so you should - great.

Louis Walsh: A great, great Christmas song, great harmonies, fantastic - as Sharon would say, 'fabulous'.

Sharon Osbourne: Fantastic song, one of the best Christmas songs ever and you did it great.

Song three - Let It Be by the Beatles

Simon Cowell: You saved the best 'til last boys, you saved the best 'til last. I know I said this last week but I've just got to reiterate - it has been an absolute pleasure, you have been fantastic to work with. You have come such a long way - fantastic.

Louis Walsh: Another great performance and a really good song, you really looked like you were enjoying yourselves up there tonight, that makes such a difference. Everybody here loves you.

Sharon Osbourne: I'm so glad you chose that song to sing, it's so appropriate. You know what I love about you? The family is so important to me and I love the way you guys are so close with each other. It's just so important and more people should notice that so brothers and sisters get on - it's so touching.
