'I will be cleared'

Colonel Tim Collins was said today to be confident of being cleared by an investigation into his conduct during the war in Iraq. The soldier, who was a Lieutenant Colonel with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment and has since been promoted, told a national newspaper: "I'm astonished. I am confident my good name will be restored." Speaking from his home in Canterbury, Kent, Col Collins said he had "no idea how they the allegations came about". Col Collins, 43, is accused of breaching the Geneva Convention in his treatment of PoWs and an Iraqi civic leader. Ministry of Defence sources yesterday confirmed the complaint was made by an American officer. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT Col Collins delivered a rousing address to his men hours before they went into battle against Saddam Hussein's forces, a speech which earned him lavish praise from the Prince of Wales and was admired by US president George Bush. Now the Northern Ireland-born officer is being investigated by the Army and it is understood the investigation is at an advanced stage.
