Gigging against the war

May 16 2003

By Evening Gazette

Protesters who opposed the conflict in Iraq are putting on a benefit gig in Stockton.

At least four acoustic performers -Teesside artists Elaine Palmer, Ian Monaghan, Andy Jones and Becki Owen - play the Georgian Theatre, in Green Dragon Yard, tomorrow in a gig that will raise cash for the Stockton Stop The War Coalition.

The event will be the first of several staged around the North-east, all to raise cash for the anti-war group.

Anne Hollifield, campaign spokeswoman, said: "This war was meant to be about weapons of mass destruction - yet none have been found or were used by the Iraqis.

"The true reason for the war is clearly demonstrated by the widespread looting of Iraq's resources, particularly the oil reserves, by the US, which has now set up "the Authority" to run Iraq, the better to hand out business deals worth millions to supporters of Bush's Republican Party.

"We will continue to oppose this war, and to support the Iraqi people in their attempts to determine their own future.

"Saturday's gig is about continuing the campaign."

* Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets are £3.50 each, available from Sound it Out records in Stockton.
