GBH shame soldier can go to Iraq

May 21 2003

By Evening Gazette

A soldier walked free from court so that he can fly out to Iraq next month with his Catterick-based regiment.

Private Graham Moody, 21, of The First Queen's Lancashire Regiment, admitted causing grievous bodily harm to a civilian outside Harry's Bar in Catterick Garrison, Teesside Crown Court heard.

An officer wrote to the judge saying Moody was "exactly the type of soldier I would want by my side in the forthcoming tour of Basra and northern Iraq".

Prosecutor Shaun Dodds said Moody approached victim Lee Colling from behind and punched him, breaking his nose. He fell backwards onto the tarmac, also suffering a suspected fractured skull.

He was absolutely appalled by his own behaviour, said Stuart Allison, defending.

Recorder Neil Davey QC, said he would do everything he could to ensure Moody was allowed to go to Iraq. Moody, of Alma Barracks, Catterick Garrison, who also pleaded guilty to affray was ordered to pay £2,500 compensation to Mr Colling and to pay £235 prosecution costs.
