Tried and tested

Jan 30 2006

Most kids love making things so we had two excited children on our hands eager to give the new Truly Healthy Yogurt Maker a whirl.

The blurb that comes with it promises a simple and tasty way to enjoy fresh live yogurt packed with all those billions of good bacteria that are supposed to be so good for us - or probiotic to give them their proper name.

And the people at Truly Healthy products reckon because you make it yourself you get added benefits as the yogurt isn't sitting on a shelf in a supermarket losing all its vital statistics.

Anyhow, we tried making the lemon version and it was easy peasy lemon squeezy. You get a sachet of yogurt mix, empty it into a shaker that contains water, put the lid on and shake away until the powder has dissolved. Then you put the whole container inside another one that contains hot water and leave it to set for six to nine hours. After that, leave it in the fridge till it's cold and hey presto! One kilo of fresh yogurt and all those healthy bacteria primed and ready for eating.

The kids had fun making it although ours turned out a little bit runny at the end, it tasted okay though - rather like lemon mousse if truth be told. The maker was easy to clean too - it's only a plastic container within another plastic container.

* Truly Healthy Yogurt Maker, priced around £12.50, is available from For Goodness Sake, Newport Road, Middlesbrough and all good health food stores or you can visit: www.trulyproducts.com  You can choose from Greek Style, Bio-Lite, Lemon, Blueberry, Toffee or Raspberry flavour Truly Yogurt bases priced between £1.65 and £1.85 per pack.
