Plan for phone mast is rejected

Aug 6 2005

By Evening Gazette

Concerns from residents helped throw out plans for a 40ft mobile phone mast in Hartlepool.

Mobile phone company O2 submitted plans to build a telecommunications column and two equipment cabinets on land opposite Aldi in Hart Lane.

But following objections from residents in the Newquay and Padstow Close areas, the application was unanimously rejected by Hartlepool Council's planning committee this week.

Councillor Bill Iseley, chair of the planning committee, said: "Clearly, there was strong opposition from local residents and their views were shared by the local councillors at the meeting."

Throston Ward councillors Stephen Wallace and Peter Jackson both spoke out against the application.

Councillor Wallace said: "Residents presented me with an 80-strong petition which is a demonstration of the strength of opposition.

"There is already an anti-social behaviour problem which is caused by young people gathering on a night-time in the area where the mast was proposed.

"Residents feel that the installation of the mast and associated equipment cabinets would only compound the situation."

Councillor Jackson added: "The proposed mast site is only a few metres away from the nearest properties and this was a real concern for neighbouring residents. I am delighted that the committee has unanimously refused the application."

The application was refused on the grounds that it would be visually intrusive and add to the area's anti-social behaviour problems.
