Evening Gazette opinion

A very special dad-son link: Life took a cruel and terrible twist for Nabeel Masdooq when fire raged through his Teesside home. His young wife Sadia and two of his sons, Ahsan and Shamoon, perished in the blaze.

Nabeel was left distraught, horrified and grief-stricken. But he was also left with one priceless link to the family he once had - his surviving son Hamza.

And today, a year on from the tragedy, he can reflect on how his relationship with the boy is helping him on the road to the future.

The love between father and son will be crucial for both of them in the years ahead.

At the moment the emotional wounds, inflicted in those dreadful moments when the blaze took his wife and two sons from him, are still too raw for Nabeel to properly get on with his life. He has been left terrified to let Hamsa out of his sight for fear this son will be taken from him too.

But Nabeel says Hamsa is his life. Their relationship is a deep one.

It is a relationship that will carry each of them forward with a bond of togetherness forged through tragedy. Neither will get over that fateful day, nor will they fully want to. But in each other the power of close family love should provide the strength they need to survive. We wish them well in the future.
