A mirrored monolith has been unveiled as Middlesbrough's latest piece of public art.
Spectra-txt is a 10m high, four-sided, mirrored post covered in more than 1,000 fibre optic lights.
The lights pulse and flash six different patterns in a number of colours.
To change the pattern and colours on display anyone can send a text message through their mobile phone to a number requesting it to change to a new sequence.
Designed by artist Peter Freeman, the post was unveiled in its new position at the junction of Linthorpe and Newport roads last night.
The eye-catching post cost £90,000 to build and put in place and was paid for partly with European money.
One of the first text messages sent to the post asking it to change colour came all the way from Tahiti - where Middlesbrough-born explorer Captain Cook had visited 236 years to the day earlier.
For Peter Freeman, last night's launch was a nerve jangling experience.
"It looks great and I'm so glad it works well but it has been the most nerve-wracking thing," he said.
"Light generates good feelings and that's what I am trying to do with this sculpture.
"I'm also interested in how people engage with sculpture and this as a sculpture is a very interactive piece."
The number to text to change the display is 07919 000077. Each text costs the minimum price available on the phone the message comes from.
