A gang of drunken teenagers filmed secretly as they attacked police trying to control them were ordered by a judge yesterday to do hard, unpaid work. Judge George Moorhouse told the group from Billingham that teenagers full of drink on the streets caused fear to the public and they must be taught to behave. The judge imposed maximum Community Punishment orders of 240 hours on three of four lads and he warned that they would be locked up if they acted that way again. The midnight disturbance involving 15 youths in Belasis Avenue, Billingham, was captured on a video camera mounted on an unmarked police car, which was sent to the scene, said Shaun Dodds, prosecuting. Uniformed officers approached the youths who were swearing, shouting abuse and making threats of violence. A special constable suffered facial injuries as the youths attacked with kicks and punches and a road sign was thrown at the unmarked police car, Teesside Crown Court was told. Steven Thomas, 17, threw a metal sign at police officers, jumped on a wall as others attacked them and he was gesturing to the attackers. His sister Danielle, 19, took off her coat and advanced at police shouting abuse. Steven Kelly, 19, squared up to one officer and was seen punching out. Anthony Kelly, also 19, walked around aggressively and he pushed one officer to a wall, which escalated the violence. Aaron Nesbitt, 17, threw the road sign at the police car causing damage to its bonnet, said Mr Dodds. Danielle Thomas told police later that she started kicking an officer and flinging her arms about, adding: "All I saw were lots of people on top of an officer". Judge Moorhouse told the five: "It's quite clear from what I've seen and read about you in reports that you were all extremely drunk on the night having been celebrating not only someone's birthday but a football result. "You know that young people in city centres full of drink cause fear to people. The thumping, kicking of police officers, throwing signs at police officers and damaging their properties justifies a custodial sentence." Steven Kelly, 19, and Anthony Kelly, 17, of Rydale Avenue, Billingham, and Aaron Nesbitt, also 17, of Parklands Avenue, Billingham, were sentenced to 240 hours Community Punishment, Steven Thomas, 17, of Mond Crescent, Billingham, to 200 hours punishment, and Danielle Thomas, 19, also of Mond Crescent, Billingham, to a 12 months Community Rehabilitation Order. They pleaded guilty to causing an affray on Sunday, October 12, last year, damaging property and threatening words and behaviour. Evening Gazette opinion |
