Page 4: Unlikely draw for tourists?

Whoever would have thought a rusting US oil refuelling ship could be a tourist attraction?

Certainly not Peter Stephenson - who yesterday revealed that three councils had asked if the much maligned ships could be used as a museum.

"We have had a tremendous amount of interest from people in Europe and Canada," he said.

"They have all been asking when will the boats be open to visitors!

"So far one European country and at least three councils in the UK, all in areas with ports, want us to make the vessels into a museum.

"Whether that interest will maintain once all the media interest in this issue has died down I don't really know," he added.

"For now our contract is very clear.

"If there was a good case for them to be made into museums, maybe it is something we could look at.

"But then we would only consider that once all the correct procedures have been gone through and we have done the remediation work.

"As far as we're concerned this could be a secondary benefit of this project and it is something we could perhaps spare one of the boats for.

"It will be looked into.

"How could this be detrimental to tourism in Hartlepool? People want to see them," said Mr Stephenson.
