Terror after dark

Oct 25 2002

Sarah Ivison, Evening Gazette

Paint-stripper thugs have targeted a disabled Teesside dad and his family in the dead of night.

Ron Carter-Bonsteel woke today to discover the damage from the latest in a string of attacks on his property.

In the early hours the family cars - a Fiat Multipla and a Citroen Picasso - were covered in the paint-stripper.

The 44-year-old, who uses a wheelchair and crutches, lives in Castlewood, Cargo Fleet Lane, Middles-brough, with his wife Vivien, 41, daughter Donna, 20, and her two children, Nathan, two, and one-year-old Troy.

His daughter Karen, 19, sons David, 17, Wayne, 16, and John, 11, and daughter Samantha, ten, also live with them.

David is registered blind and has a spinal condition. Wayne is registered partially sighted and also suffers from bone problems.

They were allocated a conversion of two council houses in Castlewood, off Cargo Fleet Lane, to accommodate the family.

Mr Carter-Bonsteel said the culprits have already caused £8,000 worth of damage and this latest attack is expected to cost up to £5,000 to repair.

He said: "We waited ages for this house to come up and were really looking forward to moving into it two years ago.

"But we didn't realise what the area was like and though there are some nice families who live in Thorntree, there is a growing minority that are taking over.

"And it feels like they're winning because we do now want to leave but there isn't another house available for us so we have to stay.

"We just keep ourselves to ourselves and just want to live in peace. It's really affecting my family. The children are getting really upset about it."

On December 13 last year, £4,000 of damage was done to his two cars and paint was thrown at the house doors. Then on December 15 his daughter Donna's window was smashed at her former Thorntree home.

Mr Carter-Bonsteel said she was so frightened living in her previous home she moved back in with her family.

Bottles were thrown through a downstairs bedroom window on February 7. On March 3 their garage was broken into and on March 23 there was a paint stripper attack.

* Cleveland Police urge anyone who has witnessed this incident to contact them on 01642 303126.
