Proper Charlie...

Oct 27 2004

By Evening Gazette

I wish to thank M J Huskisson, Animal Welfare Information Service, for his letter explaining the likely outcomes of the Hunting Bill (By Royal Consent, 6.10.04)

Prince Charles has made known his intention to carry on hunting, regardless of the law, and that will, in my view, stimulate a call for an end to the monarchy.

I believe there are already very few people who would support a King Charles and Queen Camilla.

It is my belief that the "civil war" threatened by fox hunting supporters is much more likely to come from the civilised non-hunting communities, unless the royals bow to public pressure.

The barbarity of fox hunting, has been discussed and generally frowned upon as long as I can remember, that is around 70 years, and an outright ban is long overdue.

I was brought up in a largely rural area of Durham and have seen the ravages of a fox on a chicken pen, leaving every bird dead, robbing my children of their food, but I cannot condone the cruelty of fox hunting.

I totally agree that most fox hunters would derive just as much pleasure from drag hunting, carried out in a similar way to dog racing, where the live hare was replaced by a dummy many years ago - even before my time.
