Family's eviction fear

Jan 18 2006

By Evening Gazette

A Sri Lankan family fighting to stay on Teesside was today threatened with being thrown on to the streets.

Campaigners were due to gather outside the Middlesbrough home of Pransothy and Thayalini Sivakaran after being told bailiffs were to evict the couple and their young baby son, Anraj, today.

The couple settled in the town in 2000 and sought asylum, but their bid was refused. The couple have put in a new application on compassionate grounds, as their son has medical problems.

Pransothy had managed to find a job but, as the family's asylum bid is under review, Home Office regulations mean he is not allowed to work, so cannot earn money to pay the rent on their Glebe Road home.

Kath Sainsbury, a co-ordinator with the National Coalition of Anti-deportation Campaigns, said the campaigners accept the landlord has the right to receive rent. She added: "The problem is with the Home Office denying work permission and any support for the family."

Pransothy said: "Immigration say it is now safe for us to go back, but now we hope to stay as our son needs medical treatment."

The Home Office is unable to discuss individual cases.
