Woman jumps to her death from cliff

Aug 26 2005

By Evening Gazette

Horrified onlookers saw a woman leap to her death from cliffs at Saltburn.

Police were at the scene with relatives of the woman, who was seen to jump from Huntcliff at around 2.45pm yesterday.

The 51-year-old woman, who has not been named, was from Skelton.

A Humber Coastguard spokesman said they were alerted by police who requested assistance from the Coastguard and RNLI as a woman was threatening to jump from the cliffs near The Ship Inn.

Police were already at the scene with relatives of the woman.

Redcar's inshore lifeboat and Skinningrove Coastguard team were called to assist. As they arrived at the scene the woman was seen to jump. She died at the scene.

A Cleveland Police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious. The coroner has been informed.
