Signing up to speed conflict: The 'tidal wave' of drivers who could potentially strive to have their speeding convictions overturned, in the light of road signs being dubbed illegal, is going to cause embarrassment and expense on a mighty scale.

For all of those who rant against the vast amount of cameras motorists now face and the apparent police obsessions with nabbing erring drivers, this is gleeful news.

But away from the knee-jerk reaction of cheering the 'little man' victory against authority, it would be a little bit disingenuous for tens of thousands of people to get their convictions quashed because of a technicality.

If the police have made a mistake they should rap someone over the knuckles and replace the illegal signage straight away.

A blunder of this nature has, quite rightly, thrust the controversial 'speed camera' issue into the spotlight, centre stage, but at the end of the day it was only an administrative error.

What is beyond doubt is that those who paid up their fines and accepted their penalty points were still guilty of speeding.

We can only hope that this unfortunate lady's plight touches the public's heart and that the descriptions she has given of these villains strikes a chord with someone.

These are the sort of despicable people best taken off our streets.
