Eight fire appliances tackled a blaze involving waste material at a landfill site.
Firefighters were called out to the Seaton Meadows landfill site at Brenda Road, Hartlepool at about midday yesterday.
Billingham Station Officer David Kelly said the fire involved 40 tonnes of "low hazardous" waste.
He said: "We spent four hours there. It took us about two hours to extinguish the fire."
Having dealt with the blaze, firefighters then remained on protective stand-by.

Crews from Billingham, Hartlepool, Stockton and Grangetown were called to the scene.
SO Kelly said it was made more difficult due to the intensity of the fire and the danger posed by exploding canisters.
He said it also caused thick black acrid smoke to drift across the area.
SO Kelly added that the cause of the blaze was being investigated.
