Police in gun hunt arrest teen

Feb 5 2003

By The Evening Gazette

Police hunting the young gunman who almost blinded a teenager when he hit him with an airgun pellet have arrested a teenager.

The 15-year-old from the Eston area was arrested yesterday in connection with the attack on another 15-year-old on Monday.

The victim was walking home from school along Cleveland Street, Eston, at around 3.45pm when he heard the sound of a gunshot and felt a searing pain near his eye.

He had to have the pellet removed at Middlesbrough General Hospital.

The youngster was so stunned by the attack he failed to get a description of his attacker.

But police say a positive response from members of the public led officers to a youth.

PC Hugh Doherty said: "We had a number of calls from the public which provided very useful information and I would like to thank all those who took the trouble to ring us."

The youth has been bailed while inquiries continue.
