Man is held over airgun horror

May 16 2003

By Evening Gazette

Police have arrested a man in connection with an airgun incident that could have cost a young boy an eye.

The 19-year-old Stockton man was arrested today on suspicion of assault.

Dylan Cook, eight, was shot as played in a park close to his home in the town's Alder Street.

He was blasted in the face - with the pellet missing his eye by millimetres.

His mum, Tracy Oliver, had let Dylan go to the Hamilton Road 'Rec' to play football with older boys on Wednesday .

The next thing she knew, the teenager brought him to her, saying he had accidentally shot him.

Dylan was taken to Middlesbrough General Hospital where he was released after treatment.

The latest incident prompted MP for Stockton South Dari Taylor to repeat her backing for the Evening Gazette's 'Ban Young Guns' campaign, to have air weapons taken out of the hands of children.

A Bill containing measures to prevent the sale of air guns to anyone under 17 and to prohibit their use in a public place is currently going through Parliament.

But Mrs Taylor wants it toughened up and will use Dylan's case to press home her point when it is debated on Tuesday. Mrs Taylor wants the law changed so that all air weapons are licensed.
