Our Heroes!

Oct 26 2004

Audrey Forbes, Evening Gazette

Reports of anti-social behaviour in a Teesside village have dropped dramatically.

Community Council chair Lesley McGloin believes the reduction is thanks to the dedicated wardens pounding Nunthorpe's streets.

In previous years, Nunthorpe residents have lived in fear of youths climbing on to buildings, starting fires, vandalising property, abusing passers-by and under-age drinking.

In light of the problems, Nunthorpe Parish Council set up a steering group in a bid to curb anti-social behaviour. Reports have fallen significantly and Mrs McGloin paid glowing tribute to the committed wardens.

"We've noticed a big improvement since the patrols started," she said.

"Reports of anti-social behaviour have dropped and there's a real feel-good factor here."

Middlesbrough Council's Executive Member for Community Safety & Leisure, Barry Coppinger said the impressive results indicated how the wardens' presence gave people peace of mind and made a visible difference.

He said: "It also shows how a rapid response to residents' complaints by our mobile patrols can help prevent the escalation and repetition of anti-social behaviour."

Meanwhile, Mrs McGloin vowed the newly-formed Community Council would forge stronger links with younger members of the community.

She said. "We're trying to build up relationships with youths and children and get them involved in the community.

She added: "Hopefully we'll work alongside the Parish Council in bringing people together."
